City Campus, Kirkcaldy Campus
The care of people who suffer from a range of mental health problems, such as anxiety and depressive illness or schizophrenia, is moving away from treatment in a hospital setting to clients being cared for in the community. This means that as a mental health nurse you will look after people in their own homes in a visiting capacity or within day units, and acute hospital settings.
This programme provides you with the ability to effectively assess, manage and treat those clients and their carers within a multi-disciplinary team of psychiatrists, nurses, social workers and other professionals allied to medicine.
The practice placements you will experience include general medical and surgical areas, residential care homes for the elderly, nursing homes and long stay in-patient psychiatric placements plus a variety of community placements.
You will also be offered an elective placement in your third year in which you can choose a speciality area such as the treatment of children / adolescents who have emotional / psychological difficulties, people with alcohol / drug problems or within a prison working with mentally ill offenders. If you wish to venture further afield there are opportunities to experience your elective placement abroad.
Your programme will be student centred, adult oriented and will occur within a multi-professional environment. This means that you may share your learning with other students who are studying for allied professions such as medicine or social work. This shared learning will broaden your horizons in education generally as well as professionally.
