This is a vocational and skills-specific course suitable for those who have the desire to pursue Journalism as a career.

Journalists must have the essential skills of writing and research but are now expected to record sound, shoot video and edit on digital systems. They are also increasingly expected to produce their own web content. This course has been developed to ensure that students are well versed and practiced in digital skills which are the future of Journalism.

Year one:
News and Feature Writing; Research and Interview Skills; Sub-editing; Scots Law; Radio News; Radio Interviewing; Public Affairs (politics).

Throughout the course you’ll have access to radio and television studios.

Year two:
Feature Writing; Public Affairs; Scots Law; Sub-editing at an advanced level.

Added to these will be video skills, online reporting, social and ethical issues and work experience.



Entry Requirements

Higher English, or NQ Media, or other relevant national qualifications at SCQF Level 6. Interview and written test.

Progression Routes

After you complete your HND you may progress to:
2nd or 3rd year of BA (Hons) Journalism or Sports Journalism at UWS.
2nd or 3rd year of BA (Hons) Journalism at Edinburgh Napier University.

Students also continue onto courses at the University of Stirling and Glasgow Caledonian University.
