Microbiology is the study of the smallest living organisms (micro-organisms or microbes), which include viruses, bacteria, fungi, algae and protozoa. Microbes are a major cause of disease in humans but are useful in industrial processes from pollution control to the treatment of disease.
Years 1 and 2
Subjects include molecular bioscience, biology of organisms, chemistry for bioscience, an introduction to infection and immunity, nutritional biochemistry and metabolism, cell and molecular biology and human physiology.
You’ll also choose two elective subjects from other departments across the University.
Years 3 and 4
You’ll specialise in microbiology.
Year 5
You’ll carry out a research project and specialise in one subject.
2027 entry requirements
Standard entry:
4 or 5 Highers at AAAB or AABBC including Biology (or Human Biology) and Chemistry at B plus English and Maths at National 5 at B. Higher English preferred.
Entry to year 2 may be possible with Advanced Higher Biology and Chemistry at AB or BA plus above.
Widening access entry:
4 or 5 Highers at AABB or AABCC including Biology and Chemistry at B plus English and Maths at National 5 at B. Higher English preferred.
A Foundation Apprenticeship is accepted in place of a non-essential Higher.
