Biology involves the study of life at all levels, from the molecular biology of virus replication to the study of animals and plants in their natural habitats. Biology also touches on many aspects of contemporary life, from drug design and investigating the molecular basis of Alzheimer’s disease, to the migration and conservation of marine mammals – all of which can be studied at St Andrews.

The primary focus of Mathematics at St Andrews is understanding patterns and structure, and developing the tools with which to analyse them. Students of mathematics are able to describe, categorise and understand processes involved in physical or biological phenomena, as well as the structure of mathematics itself.

The study of Mathematics at St Andrews allows students to specialise in either pure or applied mathematics, from abstract theory to a range of applications in physics, computer science, biology and finance.

2025 entry requirements

Standard entry:
4 Highers at AAAAB including Maths at A and Biology (or Human Biology) plus English at National 5 at B.

Widening access entry:
4 Highers at AABB including Maths at A and Biology (or Human Biology) plus English at National 5 at B.

Entry into second year is possible with Advanced Higher Maths and Biology at A plus Highers at AAAAB.
