This HNC Applied Science (life sciences) is ideal for learners with an interest in the biological and life sciences who want to progress to university or work in health, environmental, or research settings.

You’ll study key areas including Cell Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Biochemistry, developing a strong understanding of how living systems function — from molecules to organisms. The course blends theory and hands-on laboratory work, giving you practical experience of scientific techniques used in research, healthcare, and industry.

You will build up an excellent understanding of a broad range of scientific concepts and skills, including:
Cell Biology; Chemistry; Anatomy and physiology; Microbiology; Mathematics and Statistics; Biochemistry; Scientific Techniques; Dissertation Writing.

You will also learn to perform a vast range of scientific techniques essential for industry and academia.

Entry Requirements

Higher Biology (or Human Biology) or Chemistry plus English, Maths, Biology and Chemistry at National 5, or relevant national qualifications at SCQF Level 6.

You must meet widening access criteria.

Progression Routes

Year 1 or 2 of related degree programmes at universities across Scotland, including Biochemistry, Microbiology, Environmental Biology, Neuroscience or Pharmacology.
