This course offers broad-based training in modern, pure and applied mathematics, together with a sound knowledge of key areas in contemporary statistics. It allows students to study both mathematics and statistics courses in each year of the course. A blend of compulsory and optional courses in mathematics ensures a broad knowledge base, and the statistics course offers additional expertise in data analysis, rational decision making, and the modelling of random behaviour. The course develops valuable transferable skills in numeracy, analytical and logical reasoning and problem solving which lead to a wide variety of possible careers.
Year 1: This year is designed to ease the transition from school to university. You will take courses in calculus and algebra which continue the study of these subjects already studied along with an introduction to statistics, problem solving and the use of computer packages. Students also choose an elective course.
Year 2: In the second year you will continue their study of calculus, algebra and statistics taking courses in multivariable calculus and real analysis, linear algebra and probability and statistics. In addition, you will start the study of pure and applied mathematics and numerical analysis.
Year 3: You will study abstract algebra, ordinary differential equations, complex analysis and statistical modelling. In addition you will continue the study of pure and applied mathematics and numerical analysis.
Year 4: In statistics, you will study statistics for social science and either Bayesian inference or time series, together with some of the mathematics options also offered in the BSc Mathematics degree.
2020 entry requirements:
Standard entry: 5 Highers at ABBBB including Maths at A plus English at National 5.
Widening access entry: 4 Highers at BBBC including Maths at B plus English at National 5.
For entry to Level 2 you would require 3 Advanced Highers at ABB including Maths at A plus 5 Highers at ABBBB.
