The degree in Biology requires you to develop a broad understanding of the nature of living things, from molecules and cells to organisms and populations, communities and biomes but, crucially, it also allows you to become a specialist in the area that is of most interest to you. Your courses (modules) will give you an excellent foundation in the theory and practical elements behind the study of life and provide you with the technical skills to pursue your own interests through your project work.

Year 1:
Frontiers in Biological Sciences; Diversity of Life 1 and 2; The Cell; Ecology and Environmental Science.

Year 2:
Introduction to Genetics; Biological Enhanced Skills Training (BEST); Ecology; Plants, People, and the Environment; Fundamentals in Marine Biology; Comparative Physiology; One of the following field courses: Field Skills in Ecology and Animal Behaviour; The Living Landscape; Coastal Biodiversity; Field Biology; Marine Field Ecology.

Year 3:
Statistical Analysis of Biological Data; Animal Evolution and Biodiversity; Plant Environment Interactions; Environmental Physiology; Ecological Genomics or Population Ecology.

Year 4:
In year 4, the Honours year, you will carry out a research project as well as writing an extended essay and completing four courses of your choosing.

Entry Requirements

2025 entry requirements:

Standard entry:
4 Highers at BBBB (by end of S5) including 2 maths or science subjects by end S6 plus English, Maths and Chemistry or Physics at National 5. Those with Highers at BBB by end of S5 are encouraged to apply.

For second year entry you would require the above plus 3 Advanced Highers at ABB including Biology and another maths or science subject at AB or BA.

Widening access entry:
2 Highers at BB (by end of S5). Additional Highers/Advanced Highers in S6.

1 Foundation Apprenticeship is accepted in place of a non-essential Higher.
