Why Study a Foundation Apprenticeship?

Studying for a Foundation Apprenticeship gives you the chance to combine work based qualifications such as Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) or National Certificate (NC) with practical work experience in industry.

Who Can Apply?

The Foundation Apprenticeship (FA) in Accountancy is for pupils staying on at school. You can choose an FA as one of your subjects in S5 or S6.

Entry Requirements

These vary depending on whether you start the Foundation Apprenticeship in S5 or S6. It could range from some subjects at National 5 to 1 or 2 Highers. Check with your school for details.

Course Content

You will achieve a Foundation Apprenticeship (Group Award) in Accountancy at SCQF Level 6 (the same level as Highers), which includes NPA in Accountancy and a choice of either AAT or ACCA Pathways:

National Progression Award (NPA) in Accountancy

• Preparing Management Accounting Information
• Analysing Account information
• Preparing Financial Accounting Information
• Recording Transactions in the Ledger
• Professional Ethics for Accountants.

AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) Route Certificate in Accounting

• Introduction to Bookkeeping
• Principles of Bookkeeping.

OR:

ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) Diploma in Financial Management Accounting

• Financial Accounting (FA2).

A work-based challenge unit.

Qualifications Gained

• National Progression Award (NPA) in Accountancy at SCQF Level 6.
• Core units of the AAT Certificate in Accounting at SCQF Level 6/OR core unit of the ACCA Diploma in Financial Management Accounting at SCQF Level 6 which awards the Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping.

What can I go on to next?

There are several progression routes after completing an FA in Accountancy.

• Employment within an accountancy firm or in a related business.
• You could continue your studies at college or university, gaining an HND or degree in accountancy.
• You could complete a Modern Apprenticeship in Accountancy at SCQF Levels 5 and 6.
• You could go on to a Technical Apprenticeship in Accountancy at SCQF Level 8.
