Why Study a Foundation Apprenticeship?

Studying for a Foundation Apprenticeship gives you the chance to combine work based qualifications such as Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) or National Certificate (NC) with practical work experience in industry.

Who Can Apply?

The Foundation Apprenticeship (FA) in Scientific Technologies is for pupils staying on at school. You can choose an FA as one of your subjects in S5 or S6.

Entry Requirements

These vary depending on whether you start the Foundation Apprenticeship in S5 or S6. It could range from some subjects at National 5 to 1 or 2 Highers. Check with your school for details.

Course Content

National Progression Award in Applied Sciences

• Laboratory Safety
• Mathematics for Science
• Fundamental Chemistry: An Introduction
• Experimental Procedures: Science.

As part of your workplacement you will learn how to follow health and safety procedures for scientific or technical activities, carry out simple scientific or technical tests using manual equipment, and prepare compounds and solutions.

Qualifications Gained

• National Progression Award (NPA) in Applied Sciences at SCQF Level 6.
• core units of the SVQ Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities (Industrial Science) at SCQF Level 6.

1 - 2 years

What can I go on to next?

• You could go onto complete the Modern Apprenticeship in Life Sciences and the Related Science Industries at SCQF Level 7.
• You may gain entry to the Technical Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 8.
• You could continue your studies at college or university, gaining an HND or degree.
• You could go into a job in the industry.
