Barony Campus
If you're interested in working in forestry and arboriculture, this course provides an introduction to a broad range of relevant topics, balanced with strong practical content.
You'll work on college grounds and public and private forest estates to gain sound practical experience in the subject, and benefit from our well-established links with the industry, which have already helped many students obtain work experience and, in some cases, employment.
Your core topics on this course include tree identification, tractor operations, chainsaw maintenance and felling of small trees.
A mix of classroom sessions, field trips and practical training will teach you about forests and woodlands, tree planting practices and fencing and estate skills. In the tree nursery, you will find out about soils and how to grow trees from seeds and cuttings.
Through small project work and exercises, you’ll be able to work on communication, mathematics and computer skills.
You'll also have the chance to undertake industry certification, such as woodchipper operations, chainsaw maintenance and cross-cutting and felling of small trees using a chainsaw.
Content includes: Chainsaw Operations; Tree Identification; Introduction to Forests and Woodlands; Tree Production; Introduction to Forest Harvesting.
