This SWAP Access to Humanities (Geography) course is designed for adults seeking to return to study and progress to university, but without the formal qualifications. It offers a supportive, structured route back into education — helping you rebuild academic confidence, strengthen analytical skills, and explore how the world around us is shaped by natural, social and economic forces.
You’ll engage with themes of environment, globalisation, place-making, society and change, while developing the study, research and communication skills necessary for higher education.
Successful completion of this course provides recognised entry routes to partner universities, including:
Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU); University of Glasgow; University of Stirling; University of Strathclyde; University of the West of Scotland (UWS).
What you will learn:
A range of social science subjects, including Psychology, Sociology and Politics, History and Philosophy, Communications and Literature (Higher level), Mathematics (National 5 Applications); Preparation for Higher Education.
Assessment types include essays, reports, class-based tests, group discussions and presentations at the end of each unit, rather than big exams at the end of the year.
No formal entry requirements. You should have been out of formal education for at least 3 years. Entry subject to interview.
This course offers opportunities to progress to university degree courses in primary teaching, secondary teaching, social work, psychology, history, sociology, social and public policy, community education, law, business, marketing, criminal justice, philosophy, English literature, local authority and civil service, heritage and tourism, and NGO/third sector, among many others.
