This course helps develop the skills you need to work in the thoroughbred racing horse industry, either stud or racing. At the same time, it helps you gain the personal, interpersonal and workplace skills that will help you succeed in any job.

Offered in conjunction with the Scottish Racing Academy, this course is recognised by the British Horseracing Authority.

This course is the first step on the ladder of equine qualifications offered at SRUC and runs in parallel with the NC in Horse Care.

It is designed to give a practical foundation in the care of racehorses. The course provides students with the qualification required to be eligible for employment in racing yards.

Horse Care Units include: Horse Health: An Introduction; Watering and Feeding: An Introduction; Stable Routine; Grooming and Clothing; Safe Working Practices.

Racing Specific Units include: Assisting with the Care of a Racehorse; Safe Handling of Thoroughbred Horses; Racehorse Care: Preparation for Ridden Work; Escorting Racehorses to Race Meetings; Horse Rehabilitation and Therapy.

Entry Requirements

3 subjects at National 4 preferably including English and Maths plus 2 weeks' practical work experience. Recorded evidence of ability to ride, to include a minimum of walk, trot, canter and jumping to be submitted on with application.
