Modern Apprenticeships might be right for you if you prefer to learn from hands-on experience, and would prefer part time rather than full time study. Being able to earn while you learn is another plus point.
The Modern Apprenticeship in Pharmacy Services is available at the following levels:
You will learn the skills and gain the experience required to work as a pharmacy assistant in a shop or hospital. You would talk with customers about their symptoms, liaise with the pharmacist, provide over the counter medicines, and ensure they receive the right products.
Anyone living in Scotland who is over school leaving age can apply. Sometimes employers set an upper age limit, as the Scottish Government doesn’t always fund training for those aged over 24.
You would check this with individual employers.
There are no formal entry requirements for Level 6. Level 6 is required before going on to Level 8.
You will achieve the relevant Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ), Diploma or other competency based qualification. In addition, you work towards core skills and complete industry specific training.
Level 6 takes between 12 and 24 months to complete. Level 8 takes between 24 and 36 months to complete.
After Level 6 you could progress to Level 8. After the Level 8 you'll be ready to register with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
