The HNC Social Services is a nationally recognised qualification and a valued award for people who want to work in a variety of social service settings, supporting individuals with varying needs.

You will gain an understanding of the values and principles of social services and learn how to integrate those values with necessary skills and knowledge, including the importance of anti-discriminatory practice in line with the National Care Standards and Scottish Social Services Council Codes of Practice.

Mandatory Units are:
Care in contemporary society; Leadership starts with me; Health wellbeing and safeguarding; Lifespan development theoretical approaches; Promote effective communication; Promote health, safety and security in the work setting; Develop your practice through reflection and learning; Social services graded unit 1; Care practice.

You must also choose one optional unit from:
Administration of medication; Understanding loss and the process of grief.

Entry Requirements

2 Highers preferably including English, or Foundation Apprenticeship Social Services and Healthcare, or relevant national qualifications at SCQF Level 6. You should also have experience in a social service setting or similar work, either in a voluntary or informal setting. You may also be required to attend for interview.

You will require a satisfactory criminal record check from Disclosure Scotland to show that you are suitable for this type of course. Contact Disclosure Scotland for details on the type you would need.
