Psychology is the scientific study of the mind, brain, and behaviour. It focuses on building and testing theories to explain how people interact with each other and the world around them.

Year 1:
You will receive a general introduction to psychology in your first year, covering biological, social and developmental psychology, the psychology of memory and perception, individual differences and language and thinking. You will also learn about research methods and use statistics in psychology.

Year 2:
You will continue to study the core areas of psychology, along with neuropsychology, abnormal, and historical psychology, and you will develop your research skills by practising statistics and running practical experiments.

Year 3:
You will take an advanced tutorial course to help you critically analyse psychology research papers. You will take advanced courses in the core areas required for British Psychology Society accreditation (social, developmental, biological, cognitive and differential psychology) and carry out a literature review and a group research project in one of these core areas.

Year 4:
You will continue to choose advanced option courses in psychology based on your interests. These courses are research-led. They will teach you about cutting-edge topics from psychology sub-disciplines. You will carry out a research project in psychology and submit it as a dissertation.

2026 entry requirements

Standard entry:
4 Highers at AAAB (first sitting) or AAAA (two sittings) including 1 from Maths (or Applications of Maths), Biology (or Human Biology), Chemistry, Computing Science, Geography, Physics, or Psychology plus English at National 5 at C and Maths at A or Maths and Physics at B.

Widening access entry:
4 Highers at ABBB (two sittings) including 1 from Maths (or Applications of Maths), Biology (or Human Biology), Chemistry, Computing Science, Geography, Physics, or Psychology plus English at National 5 at C and Maths at A or Maths and Physics at B. Highers at BBB must be achieved in one sitting.

Progression Routes

Degree programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society
