Enables you to gain the values, skills, knowledge and experience to develop a career as a practitioner within a range of childhood practice settings. There are a wide variety of topics covered, although learning how to provide effective support for children’s holistic needs and developing your professional practice are key elements of this award.

You will advance your current knowledge and understanding of the key legislation, policies and frameworks which underpin work with children and apply these to practice. The workplace element is also an important part of this course and will involve you in planning, implementing, evaluating, observing and assessing children’s play.

There are three mandatory SVQ units and evidence is gathered from the topics covered, observation of work experience and through discussion with your Development Officer. Work experience can be nursery provision or early primary.

Entry Requirements

2 Highers preferably including English; or Foundation Apprentice in Social Services and Young People; or or NC Early Education and Childcare. Pre-entry test.

You will require a satisfactory criminal record check from Disclosure Scotland to show that you are suitable for this type of course. Contact Disclosure Scotland for details on the type you would need.

Progression Routes

Successful completion can facilitate progression to the PDA/HND Childhood Practice (SCQF Level 8) or employment at practitioner level.
