Early Childhood

Open University in Scotland

Content

Helping children reach their full potential starts with understanding how they learn. This certificate is ideal for anyone interested in the learning and development of young children, including practitioners in early years settings or those looking for a career working with children from birth to seven. You’ll explore diverse perspectives on childhood, the importance of play and creativity, and how policy shapes early education. Through this, you’ll build a strong foundation in theory and practice. It also prepares you for further study and opens up opportunities to support young children and their families across a range of professional settings.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements to study this qualification. Computer and internet access necessary.

You do not need to be with young children in order to study this qualification, however in both core practice-focused modules it is strongly recommended students gain direct experience with young children (birth to 7 years).

Students not working with young children (employed or in a voluntary capacity) will need to negotiate opportunities to gain such practical experience. You will require a satisfactory criminal record check from Disclosure Scotland to show that you are suitable for this type of course. Contact Disclosure Scotland for details on the type you would need.
