The MA in Accountancy and Finance is a specialist degree, particularly well suited to those seeking entry into the accountancy profession and careers in financial services or financial management. The aim of the course is to encourage development of cognitive skills so that you develop knowledge and understanding, learn to apply that knowledge and understanding, and become versed in the deeper approach to learning, evidenced by powers of analysis, synthesis and evaluation.

First Year: Students will follow introductory courses in Economics, Accountancy and Finance, and Management as well as modules from a wide range of elective subjects including Legal Studies, Business Information Systems, and Modern Languages.

Second Year: The study of accountancy and finance broadens. The accountancy subjects include Financial Reporting, Management Accounting in Organisations, and Group Accounting. The finance subjects include Investment and Portfolio Theory, Corporate Finance, and Structure and Regulation of Capital Markets.

Third Year: Accounting modules include Auditing and Management Accounting. Finance modules include Mergers and Acquisitions, and Financial Derivatives. In addition, students take modules in either Taxation or Finance, as well as elective modules.

Fourth Year: Provides an opportunity for specialisation, with subjects such as Accounting Theory, Auditing, International Accounting, Management Accounting, Securities Markets, Corporate Governance, Corporate Finance, and Taxation. Students also have the opportunity during the final year to undertake a dissertation on an area of accounting or finance of particular interest.

Entry Requirements

2020 entry requirements:
Standard entry: 4 Highers at AAAB (two sittings) plus English and Maths at National 5.

Widening access entry: 4 Highers at BBBC (two sittings) plus English and Maths at National 5.

For entry to Level 2 you would require 2 Advanced Highers at BB including one from Maths, Accounting, Economics or Business Management plus 4 Highers at AAAB.
