The MA in Business and Finance is a joint degree with equal emphasis given to the subject areas of management and finance. The aim of the course is to encourage the development of cognitive skills so that students develop knowledge and understanding, learn to apply that knowledge and understanding, and become versed in the deeper approach to learning evidenced by powers of analysis, synthesis and evaluation.
First Year: Students will follow introductory courses in Economics, Accountancy and Finance, and Management as well as choosing modules from a wide range of elective subjects including Legal Studies, Business Information Systems, and Modern Languages.
Second Year: The main aspects of management and finance are developed. Management subjects include Marketing, Organisational Behaviour, and Operations Management. Finance subjects include Investment and Portfolio Theory, Corporate Finance, and Capital Markets. Modules in Statistics and Quantitative Techniques are also taken to equip you with knowledge and skills required in subsequent years.
Third Year: Core finance modules include International Financial Markets, Contemporary Issues in Corporate Finance, Mergers, Acquisitions, and Corporate Restructuring. Core management modules are Business Policy, Commercial Law, and Human Resource Management.
Fourth Year: Further specialisation in management and finance with a wide range of options to choose from. Finance modules include Securities Markets, and Corporate Governance. Management modules include Marketing, Company Law, and Diversity Management. In addition you also have the opportunity to complete either a finance or management dissertation.
2020 entry requirements:
Standard entry: 4 Highers at AAAB (two sittings) plus English and Maths at National 5.
Widening access entry: 4 Highers at BBBC (two sittings) plus English and Maths at National 5.
For entry to Level 2 you would require 2 Advanced Highers at BB including one from Maths, Accounting, Economics or Business Management plus 4 Highers at AAAB.
