Environment and Compliance Adviser

Environment and compliance advisers make sure that work carried out by oil and gas companies complies with environmental regulations and targets, such as reducing air emissions or preventing oil leaks. 

They are also known as environmental compliance officers. 

The Work

You could be: 

  • considering how activities carried out on a platform or rig will affect the environment 
  • identifying and putting into practice initiatives which reduce pollution 
  • getting permits, for example, to build subsea structures or oil platforms 
  • collecting chemical data from different well operations, such as atmospheric emissions, chemical usage and discharge, oil discharge and waste figures 
  • using spreadsheets and custom company software to organise collected data and making sure it is correct 
  • interpreting data and creating technical reports for regulatory bodies  
  • making sure the company’s systems comply with health, safety and environment (HSE) regulations 
  • carrying out environmental audits both onshore and offshore 
  • attending meetings about environmental compliance with external organisations, or incident investigations. 

Pay

Jobs are usually advertised as having a competitive salary, but starting salaries could be around £22,500 - £25,000, rising with experience.
