Founded in 1875, Queen Margaret University (QMU) has always been driven by providing up to date and relevant education and research. QMU’s courses have been developed to prepare students for fulfilling careers. Their vision is to be a university of ideas and influence.

The university offers a variety of learning and teaching methods, including group work, placements and hands-on projects with real clients. Many of their courses are recognised or accredited by professional bodies.

Courses and Specialisms

Modular courses, which allow flexibility in many degrees, are run through the following subject departments: 

From September 2019, the university is offering two new education courses: BA (Hons) Education Studies and BA (Hons) Education Studies (Primary). In 2020 the university is also offering new courses in Accounting and Finance and Marketing Management. See their website for more details.

You could spend part of your undergraduate course abroad, either through the European Erasmus+ programme or one the partnerships with non-European universities. QMU has links with institutions in Canada, the USA, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand.

Students

The university has over 7,601 students, (including 2,462 via our partners overseas), 44.1% come from Scotland, 9.5% from the rest of the UK, 32.3% from Europe and 14.2% from outside Europe.

According to HESA, 96.5% of students from the 2016/17 academic year went into employment or further study within six months of graduating.

Facilities and Services

The university's purpose built campus is on the south-east side of Edinburgh. It has an innovative learning resource centre (LRC), combining IT and library facilities, and offers a wide variety of flexible learning spaces.

It also includes well equipped specialist laboratories and clinics, ensuite student accommodation, a students’ union building, sports facilities and attractive landscaped gardens. QMU is the first Scottish university to have an on campus Business Gateway. The Gateway is run by East Lothian Council and located within QMU’s Business Innovation Zone.

Ranking

In the National Student Survey 2017, the university scored 100% for student satisfaction in three subjects: Nursing; PR, Marketing and Events; and, Diagnostic Radiography.
