UHI North, West and Hebrides is a new college formed in September 2023 from UHI North Highland, UHI Outer Hebrides and UHI West Highland. It provides learning opportunities to communities across the North and West Highlands, Skye, and Outer Hebrides
There are 19 campuses and centres across the region: Alness, Auchtertyre, Barra, Benbecula, Broadford, Cnoc Soilleir, Dornoch, Fort William, Gairloch, Halkirk, Kilchoan, Kinlochleven, Mallaig, North Uist, Portree, Stornoway, Strontian, Thurso and Ullapool.
Courses and subjects
There are courses in a range of qualifications from introductory to degree level. Subject areas include: Access and Entry Level; Adventure, Golf and Equine; Business, Hospitality and Tourism; Computing and Digital Technologies; Construction, Engineering, Maths and Science; Creative Arts, Music, Hair and Beauty; Creative Arts, Music, Hair and Beauty; Gamekeeping, Veterinary, Land and Maritime; Gaelic, Humanities and Social Sciences; Health and Social Care; and, Sustainability, Renewables and Environmental.
Facilities and services
The amenities available vary from centre to centre, but usually include computers with internet access, printing and copying facilities, study spaces and video conferencing equipment.
Facilities at different campuses include professional training kitchens, hair and beauty salons, and music recording studio, construction workshops, childcare centre and food, drink and social spaces. There are also libraries and a student services team.
Specialisms
The School of Adventure Studies, dedicated to outdoor and adventure related study, is based at Fort William, the outdoor adventure capital of the UK. The BA (Hons) Adventure Tourism Management is the only course of its kind in Scotland.
Thurso Campus has specialist training facilities at: the House of Morven (with hair and beauty salons, and training restaurant); the Engineering, Technology and Energy Centre with engineering skills and fabrication and welding workshops; the Environmental Research Institute; and the Rural Studies Centre.
Alness Campus has specialist facilities for the creative industries and health, education and social care sectors.
Dornoch Campus is home to Burghfield House, which specialises in hospitality and professional cookery training hotel; and Ross House, located next to Royal Dornoch Golf Club, the base for the golf degrees.
