Central Campus
The BMus programme is flexible and welcomes students from different backgrounds and musical experiences. It is designed so that you can tailor a pathway that best suits your musical interests and strengths.
Year 1:
You will take three compulsory courses Topics in Popular Music, Thinking about Music and Creative Musicianship.
If you have not studied music theory at a secondary-school level, you will also take Fundamentals of Music Theory. This is an intensive music literacy course.
Year 2:
You will study Music and Ideas from the Middle Ages to the Present Day.
Music history courses explore contexts of western classical music, including aesthetic, social, political and cultural contexts.
You will also study Sound Recording, which introduces you to microphone techniques, room acoustics, field recording and production.
Year 3:
You will choose from a range of specialist courses such as Composition (including electroacoustic and digital), Performance, Orchestration, Music in the Community and a range of historical options.
Year 4:
As for year 3. In fourth year you will also complete a dissertation, a recital or a portfolio of compositions.
2026 entry requirements
Standard entry:
4 Highers at AAAB (first sitting) or AAAA (two sittings) plus English at National 5 at C.
Widening access entry:
4 Highers at ABBB (by end of S6) plus English at National 5 at C. Highers at BBB must be achieved in one sitting.
If you wish to study the Performance 1 course you must have achieved ABRSM Grade 8 in their your instrument by the time course starts. You are required to enrol in the Fundamentals of Music Theory course unless you have Advanced Higher Music at A.
