Year 1: You will study the social and cultural development of Scotland from the end of the last Ice Age until the modern era. You will also explore issues involved in the presentation, interpretation, social benefits and relevance of the past in the modern world.

Year 2: You will study the archaeology of Europe and the Mediterranean through 20 key objects, which give insight into changing society, technology and political systems. You will also be introduced to the concepts, theories and practical skills and techniques of archaeology.

Years 3 and 4: If you progress to Honours (years 3 and 4) you take core courses in archaeological theory and practice, and can choose courses that explore key themes in landscape, digital media, material culture, archaeological science and heritage. You can also study specific topics such as British prehistory, Celtic & Viking archaeology, historical archaeology, contemporary archaeology, the Near East & Eastern Mediterranean, public archaeology and the archaeology of climate change & the environment, as well as a range of skills-based courses.

You will also complete a dissertation based on an original piece of research and undertake a range of practical work based on your own excavation and fieldwork experiences.

Entry Requirements

2026 entry requirements
Standard entry: 4 Highers at AAAB (by end S6 with min BBBB after S5) including 2 science subjects at AA (AB or BA may be considered).

Entry to year 2 may be possible with Advanced Highers at AAA in relevant subjects.

Widening access entry: 4 Highers at AABB or BBBB (by end S6) including 2 science subjects. Completion of pre-entry programme is necessary.
