Mathematical Biology involves using mathematical tools and techniques to answer problems that arise in the biological sciences.
Level 1 serves as an introduction to the main areas of study in mathematics (calculus, algebra, geometry and trigonometry) and to modern biology (molecules, cells and whole organisms).
Level 2 develops the basic ideas of mathematics (calculus and linear algebra) and biology. There is also an introduction to the art and science of mathematical modelling and to statistical techniques.
At Level 3 students devote 50% of their time to studying advanced mathematics modules and the other 50% to studying advanced biology. Possible topics of study include animal behaviour, differential equations, infection and immunity and human anatomy.
In Level 4 students again devote equal time to the study of mathematics and to the study of biology. There is a very wide range of topics students choose from in each area. Students also conduct group project work and an individual research project based on a mathematical investigation of a biological system.
2025 entry requirements:
4 Highers at AABB (BBBC for widening access entry) including Maths.
Advanced entry to 2nd year available with Advanced Highers at AB including Maths plus Highers at AB.
