The HND Applied Biological Sciences is a two year course with a strong emphasis on the laboratory work that complements the detailed study of scientific theory. Students develop the skills required by a laboratory scientist or technician.

The course provides excellent preparation for employment in research and industrial laboratories; biotechnology, chemical, microbiological, pharmaceutical, and environmental industries.

Subjects include:
Chemistry; Cell biology; Microbiology; Microbiological techniques; DNA and genetics; DNA molecular techniques; Human body structure and function; Laboratory skills; Research projects; Statistics and Maths; Human metabolism; Immunological techniques; Cellular signalling; Protein structure and function; Quality, health and safety systems in science industries.

Entry Requirements

Higher Biology (or Human Biology) or Chemistry plus National 5 English and Maths and Biology or Chemistry (whichever is not held at Higher) at A or B; or Foundation Apprenticeship Scientific Technologies (Laboratory Skills); or other relevant national qualifications at SCQF Level 6. Interview.

Direct year 2 entry is based on having completed an appropriate 15 credit HNC Applied Sciences. Please contact the college to discuss further.

2nd or 3rd year entry to a range of relevant degree courses. Employment in related industry.
