Biochemistry attempts to understand the complex array of molecules and their interactions which come together to create all living things.

This degree programme covers many areas of biochemistry at the molecular, cellular and organ system levels. Additionally, you will gain an in depth understanding of selected aspects of biochemistry which will reflect the research expertise and strengths within the University.

First Year: Introduction to Medical Sciences; Chemistry for the Life Sciences 1 and 2; The Cell.

Second Year: Physiology of Human Cells; Molecular Biology of the Gene; Foundation Skills for Medical Sciences; Physiology of Human Organ Systems; Microbes, Infection & Immunity; Energy for Life; Research Skills for Medical Sciences.

Third Year: Molecular Biology of the Cell; The Molecular Control of Cell Function; Frontiers of Molecular Medical Sciences; Frontiers of Biomedical Sciences.

Fourth Year (Honours): Honours Biochemistry – Option 1 and Option 2; Honours Advanced Molecular Biology; Biochemistry Honours Research Project.

Entry Requirements

2027 entry requirements:

Standard entry:
4 Highers at BBBB including 2 maths or science subjects plus English and Maths at National 5.

For second year entry you would require 2 Advanced Highers at AB.

Widening access entry:
3 Highers at BBC including 2 maths or science subjects plus English and Maths at National 5.

1 Foundation Apprenticeship is accepted in place of a non-essential Higher.
