Job Description

As a fitter, you'll install pipes, major equipment, and machinery aboard ships, and prepare seats for the main engines, gearboxes and propulsion shafts. This will involve detailed and precise alignment techniques with minimum tolerance to demonstrate a successful build.

You will be trained to assemble, install and maintain complex machinery, learn to read engineering drawings and to use a wide range of tools. As part of your role, you will look after valves, pumps and transmission systems, while being responsible for prime movers such as diesel engines and gas turbines, as well as maintenance and repair work on ships and understand the importance of Health and Safety in the workplace.

You'll join the Naval Ships business area - the team that designs, builds and delivers complex warships and combat systems.

Entry Requirements

You need 5 subjects at National 4 including English, Maths and a science or technological subject.

You will be expected to be medically fit as deemed necessary to perform the role, be eligible to work in the UK and be able to successfully achieve security clearance.

Training

This is a minimum three-year apprenticeship that will train you to work on the installation of mechanical systems during ship construction. You can expect a common basic training programme to be delivered in year one, mixing theory with practical work experience. Vocational training along with college programme in the second & third year means it’s a mixture of ‘on and the job” training’ and working on ships in construction our refit in the yards and attending a day release at college.

Qualifications Achieved

A typical apprenticeship will see you gain the following qualifications:

Year 1: SVQ Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) at SCQF Level 5 (Qualification and Core Skills Units)
Year 2: Higher or National Certificate Units and SVQ at SCQF Level 6 Units
Year 3: Higher or National Certificate and SVQ at SCQF Level 6 Qualification in your chosen trade discipline
