Content

First Year: Language studies in each language (translation, spoken classes, aural comprehension, writing in the foreign language); Modern History and Culture of the countries whose languages are being studied; Text Analysis and Production; and an additional optional subject. Students taking intensive classes in their second language do not take this optional subject.

Second Year: Language studies in each language (including translation, liaison and conference interpreting, literature); Society and Institutions in Contemporary Europe; Linguistics and an additional optional subject throughout the year.

Third Year: All students do two five-month placements, one per language studied, in countries where their foreign languages are spoken (France, Belgium, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Mexico), following courses in university departments of Interpreting and Translating, or other approved institutions.

Fourth Year: Both LINT and ALT share subjects such as Translation Studies, Applied Translation, European Studies and spoken classes. However, ALT focuses on the study of political and economic systems of relevant countries with classes taught in the two foreign languages of study.

Entry Requirements

2024 entry requirements:
Standard entry: 4 Highers at AABB (two sittings) including a relevant language at A plus English at National 5.

Widening access entry: 4 Highers at BBBC (two sittings) including a relevant language at B plus English at National 5.

For entry to year 2 you would require 2 Advanced Highers including a relevant language at B plus Highers at AABB.
