The past is fascinating and knowing about it is essential to an understanding of the present and/or the various uses that people make of history for their own ends. Studying history at Strathclyde will give you a good understanding of these problems, and will also teach you important skills in research methods, interpretation, analysis, problem-solving and communication. This training makes our graduates excellent candidates for a wide range of professions that require intellectual flexibility and analytical skill.
History may be studied until third year as one of the Principal Subjects in a BA pass degree. Nevertheless, most history students go on to read for Single or Joint Honours, and History combines well with a range of other Arts and Social Sciences subjects (possible combinations below).
2026 entry requirements
Standard entry:
4 Highers at AAAA (first sitting) or 5 Highers at AAAAB (two sittings) including English plus Maths or Applications of Maths at National 5.
Widening access entry:
4 Highers at AABB (first sitting) or 5 Highers at AABBB (two sittings) including English plus Maths or Applications of Maths at National 5.
A Foundation Apprenticeship is accepted in place of a non-essential Higher.
