Psychology courses cover the scientific study of the mind, brain, and behaviour. It is an experimental and observational science. It uses evidence from research studies to develop and evaluate theories.

Year 1:
You will receive a general introduction to psychology in your first year, covering biological, social and developmental psychology, the psychology of memory and perception, individual differences and language and thinking. You will also learn about research methods and use statistics in psychology.

You will take two semester-long introductory courses Linguistics and English Language 1A and 1B.

Year 2:
You will continue to study the core areas of psychology, along with neuropsychology, abnormal, and historical psychology, and you will develop your research skills by practising statistics and running practical experiments.

You will take Linguistic Theory and the Structure of English. In this, you will learn detailed aspects of modern English structure.

Year 3:
You will take an advanced tutorial course to help you critically analyse psychology research papers. You will take advanced courses in the core areas required for British Psychology Society accreditation (social, developmental, biological, cognitive and differential psychology) and carry out a literature review and a group research project in one of these core areas.

You will also take a selection of courses in linguistics. These may include Speech Production and Perception, Origins and Evolution of Language, Sociolinguistics and Pragmatics

Year 4:
Most students can choose from a range of specialised, research-led options. These include Clinical Neuropsychology; Human Cognitive Abilities; Memory, Ageing and the Brain; Causes and Consequences of Personality; Children with Language Impairments; and Social Judgement and Decision-Making. You will also carry out an original research project.

Standard entry:
4 Highers at AAAB (first sitting) or AAAA (two sittings) including 1 from Maths (or Applications of Maths), Biology (or Human Biology), Chemistry, Computing Science, Geography, Physics, or Psychology plus English at National 5 at C and Maths at A or Maths and Physics at B.

Widening access entry:
4 Highers at ABBB (two sittings) including 1 from Maths (or Applications of Maths), Biology (or Human Biology), Chemistry, Computing Science, Geography, Physics, or Psychology plus English at National 5 at C and Maths at A or Maths and Physics at B. Highers at BBB must be achieved in one sitting.
