This MA Primary Education with Gaelic (Fluent Speakers) prepares you to teach the full range of the pre-school and primary curriculum for children through the medium of Gaelic, as well as in English.

By the end of the 4-year programme, not only will you meet the need for Gaelic teachers in Scotland, ensuring your career viability, but also the sustainable future of Gaelic in Scotland.

Year 1:
You will study Primary Studies, Primary Literacies, Educational Studies and Gaelic. Primary education courses include placements in schools.

Year 2:
You will study Primary Studies, Educational Studies, Gaelic 2B (which includes further practical language work, as well as the study of Scottish Gaelic's history and literature), Linguistics and the Gaelic Language and Mathematics in Primary Education. Primary education courses include placements in schools.

Year 3:
You will undertake a year-long school placement which includes extensive experience of both Gaelic-medium and English-medium primary education.

You will experience a range of school stages and will develop professional skills and abilities to prepare for your induction year. You will also study 20 credits each of primary studies and Education and Gaelic in Scotland during the year, coming back in to the University on specific weeks for classes.

Year 4:
You will study primary studies, educational studies (including a dissertation) and Theory and Pedagogy of Immersion and Bilingual Education.

You will select an option from a suite of courses within the School of Education. Primary education courses include placements in schools.

Entry Requirements

2026 entry requirements

Standard entry:
4 Highers at ABBB (first sitting) or 4 or 5 Highers at AABB/ABBBB (two sittings) including English and preferably Gàidhlig plus Maths or Applications of Maths at National 5 at C and Gàidhlig at A (if not held at Higher).

Widening access entry:
4 Highers at ABBB (two sittings) including English and preferably Gàidhlig plus Maths or Applications of Maths at National 5 at B and Gàidhlig at A (if not held at Higher). Highers at BBB must be achieved in one sitting.
