Combining Persian with Social Anthropology, you will learn one of the major languages of the Middle East and Central Asia while studying human behaviour and ideas in a range of contexts.

Year 1:
In your first two years you will study Persian 1 and 2, covering basic Persian grammar, vocabulary and conversational skills. You will study Islamic history, modern Middle Eastern history and courses from your joint honours subject.

You will receive a broad introduction to social anthropology by studying Social Anthropology 1A and 1B. You will learn about participant observation and fieldwork, and consider how the discipline contributes to public debates about global issues.

Year 2:
You will continue with your Persian language study, developing the grammar and vocabulary to read, write and speak about social and everyday topics.

You will study Social Anthropology 2 and Ethnography. You will learn how concepts have shaped the development of social anthropology, and be introduced to the theory and practice of ethnographic fieldwork.

Year 3:
When study in a Persian-speaking country or at an approved institution elsewhere is permitted, you will spend Year 3 abroad at an accredited institution. This immersive learning environment will help you to improve your language, cross-cultural communication, and independent study skills.

Year 4:
You will study classical and modern Persian literature and will continue to develop your translation and conversational skills. You will also choose from a range of option courses dealing with different aspects of Iran (including pre-Islamic Persia), Islam and the Middle East. You will also complete a dissertation.

2026 entry requirements

Standard entry:
4 Highers at ABBB (first sitting) or 4/5 Highers at AABB or ABBBB (two sittings) plus a language other than English at A and English at National 5.

Widening Access entry:
4 Highers at ABBB (by end of S6) plus a language other than English at A and English at National 5. Highers at BBB must be achieved in one sitting.
