This flexible joint honours programme gives you the opportunity to study two complementary European languages in their global cultural contexts.
Beyond Italy, Spain and other parts of Mediterranean Europe, the programme is also your gateway to the history and literatures of Latin America and the Caribbean.
You will learn how to discern different varieties and registers of Spanish and Italian, and can opt to broaden your linguistic portfolio with Portuguese, Catalan or Basque.
Year 1:
You will study the foundations of the Italian language, both written and spoken. You will also take classes in Italian history, literature and arts.
You will study either Spanish 1A or 1B, depending on your language skills.
Year 2:
You will continue to study the Italian language. You will expand your knowledge of vocabulary, syntax and grammar, and develop an awareness of different registers and styles. You will also explore Italian literature, history and culture from the Middle Ages to the present day.
Students of 1A and 1B will come together in our Spanish Language 2 course. This course will help you communicate your ideas in Spanish using more nuanced grammatical structures, vocabulary and syntax.
Year 3:
You will spend Year 3 abroad, dividing your time between Italy and a country in which Spanish is spoken. This is when you will really deepen your knowledge of Italian and Spanish by speaking your languages daily and immersing yourself in local cultures.
Year 4:
Your final year will combine advanced language courses with a choice of other courses focusing on modern Italian history and literature and Medieval literature.
