Central Campus
This programme aims to develop your critical, analytic, linguistic and creative skills by engaging with a broad range of texts in both English and Italian, and a variety of approaches to reading.
In Years 1 and 2, as well as your core subjects, you will choose option courses from a wide range of disciplines. At honours level, you will choose courses that match your own expertise, employability needs or interests in specific topics, periods or literary genres.
Year 1:
You will study both the foundations of written and spoken Italian as well as study broader courses on Italian history, literature and arts.
You will take two literary studies courses. These will introduce you to the skills needed for the critical close reading of the core literary genres - poetry, drama and prose.
Year 2:
You will continue to study the Italian language. You will expand your knowledge of vocabulary, syntax and grammar, and develop an awareness of different registers and styles. You will also explore Italian literature, history and culture from the Middle Ages to the present day.
You will be introduced to the study of English literature in its cultural and historical contexts via a survey of literature from the late Medieval period to the mid-twentieth century.
Year 3:
You will spend Year 3 in Italy, deepening your knowledge of Italian by speaking it daily and immersing yourself in local cultures.
Year 4:
Your final year will combine advanced language courses with a choice of other courses focusing on modern Italian history and literature and Medieval literature.
