Studying Portuguese and Philosophy together helps you understand the contemporary world, and also sheds light on the past.
Year 1:
You will study Portuguese 1, which caters for both beginners and more advanced students. You will learn how to speak, read, listen to and write the language. By the end of the year, you will be familiar with everyday Portuguese vocabulary, grammar and syntax.
In Year 1 and 2, you will take a range of courses that introduce you to a variety of the main areas of Philosophy.
Year 2:
You will take our Portuguese Language 2 course. This builds on the skills gained in Year 1. It develops your competence in spoken and written Portuguese so that you feel confident in expressing yourself and ready to work or study abroad in Year 3.
You will take courses in areas such as epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of language and philosophy of mind
Year 3:
You will spend Year 3 in a Portuguese-speaking country, deepening your knowledge of Portuguese by speaking it daily and immersing yourself in local cultures.
Year 4:
You will study advanced language courses in Portuguese. In addition to your core courses, you will choose courses from a range of specialist, honours-level options on Lusophone history and culture, and various aspects of philosophy. You will complete a dissertation or long essay.

Standard entry:
4 Highers at AAAB (first sitting) or AAAA (two sittings) including a language other than English plus English at National 5 at C.
Widening access entry:
4 Highers at ABBB (two sittings) including a language other than English plus English at National 5 at C. Highers at BBB must be achieved in one sitting.
