Intensive language training, including a year abroad, gives you the opportunity to develop advanced speaking, writing, reading and translating skills in Spanish.

You will be immersed in an extraordinary range of literature, film, poetry and theatre from around the world, explored in its historical context.

Year 1:
You will study either Spanish 1A or 1B, depending on your language skills. Typically, students on Spanish 1B come to University with substantially more experience of studying Spanish than students on Spanish 1A.

You will study three compulsory courses in politics: Politics and International Relations 1A: Concepts and Debates; International Relations 1B: The Global Dimension; Political Thinkers (an introduction to political theory).

Year 2:
Students of 1A and 1B will come together in our Spanish Language 2 course. This course will help you communicate your ideas in Spanish using more nuanced grammatical structures, vocabulary and syntax. In both your spoken and written work, you will gain confidence in expressing yourself in Spanish ready to study or work abroad in Year 3.

Alternatively, you can begin, or continue, to study Basque or Catalan, expanding your knowledge of Iberian languages and cultures.

You will study Comparative Politics in a Globalised World.

Year 3:
You will spend Year 3 in a Spanish-speaking country, deepening your knowledge of Spanish by speaking it daily and immersing yourself in local cultures.

Year 4:
You will study advanced language courses in Spanish. You will also choose from a range of specialist, honours-level courses in Spanish and in Politics.

Standard entry:
4 Highers at AAAB (first sitting) or AAAA (two sittings) including a language other than English plus English at National 5 at C.

Widening access entry:
4 Highers at ABBB (two sittings) including a language other than English plus English at National 5 at C. Highers at BBB must be achieved in one sitting.
