French is a major world language, spoken in many parts of Europe, Africa and the Americas. On this programme, you will study the French language in the context of the diverse countries, cultures and societies in which it is spoken.

Intensive language training, including a year abroad, gives you the opportunity to develop advanced speaking, writing, reading and translating skills in French.

We will introduce you to the extraordinary richness and variety of the Francophone world through the study of: literature and cinema; political history and social movements; and philosophical ideas.

Our courses cover material from the Middle Ages to the 21st century and include specialist options in key disciplines such as decolonial, gender, and film studies, all taught by leading experts.

History
In History, you will study the human past more broadly, interacting with evidence in primary form, and through critical reading of a wide body of historical writing.

History at the University of Edinburgh is distinctive for its range of historical themes, chronological periods and geographical areas. You can choose from courses covering: the early Middle Ages to the most recent past; and Britain and Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Standard entry:
4 Highers at AABB (first sitting) or 4 Highers at AAAB (two sittings) including a language other than English plus National 5 French at B (if not held at Higher) and English at C.

Widening access entry:
4 Highers at ABBB (two sittings) including a language other than English plus National 5 French at B (if not held at Higher) and English at C. Highers at BBB must be achieved in one sitting.
