Philosophy is the study of argument and its application to a wide variety of questions of fundamental importance to human life and intellectual activity. Philosophers attempt to answer questions such as: What is knowledge? What is the nature of truth? Could the existence of God be proved? A degree in Philosophy is taught via a selection of compulsory and optional courses to enhance your learning and prepare you for a future career or further study.
Year 1: Experience, Knowledge and Reality; Controversial Questions; How Should One Live?
Year 2: Gender Equality; What We Are: Mind in a Physical World; Metaphysics, Epistemology and Language; Facts and Values.
Year 3: 90 credit points of level 3 Philosophy courses (a broad range of options including Philosophy of Time; Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason; Scepticism; Free Will and Moral Responsibility); 30 credits from courses of choice.
Year 4: Philosophy Dissertation; 60 credit points from courses of choice (a broad range of options including Sex, Race and Disability; Ancient Ethics; Metaphysics of Possibility; Knowledge, Power and Society).
2025 entry requirements
Standard entry:
4 Highers at BBBB (by end of S5) plus English at National 5. Those with Highers at BBB by end of S5 are encouraged to apply.
Entry to year 2 may be possible with 3 Advanced Highers at ABB including a relevant subject at A.
Widening access entry:
2 Highers at BB (by end of S5). Additional Highers/Advanced Highers in S6.
1 Foundation Apprenticeship is accepted in place of a Higher.
