In this course you will learn to use social scientific methods and evidence to make sense of human behaviour. You’ll learn how to think and write critically, giving you skills that can be valuable in many fields. You’ll be given opportunities to go into communities and apply your skills and knowledge in a real-world context and reflect upon the ways in which psychological and sociological knowledge can effect real change in people’s everyday lives.

Year One: Introduction to sociology; Classic and contemporary sociology; Foundations of psychology; Psychology in practice; Methods of social enquiry; Developing your academic voice.

Year Two: Exploring research; Self and identity; Responding to the world; Professional challenge; Culture and society; Biological and cognitive psychology OR Developmental and Social psychology.

Year Three: Placement module OR Sociology of work and organisation; Quantitative research methods; Social psychology and social justice OR Cognitive psychology; Interaction and social order; Developmental psychology OR Psychobiology in context; Qualitative research methods in Psychology OR Qualatitive research methods in sociology; Disseratation prep (0 credit module).

Year Four: Disseratation (Psychology or Socilogy focused dissertation) articulating your graduate identity; Three option modules.

Entry Requirements

2026 entry requirements:

4 Highers at BBBB (standard entry) or BCCC (widening access entry) plus English and preferably Maths at National 5.

For entry to year 2 you must have 2 relevant Advanced Highers at BC plus Highers at BB.
