Job Description

The role of a painter is to protect and enhance any surface which requires a paint application and ensure that this is carried out to customer requirements and standards.

Ships have to operate in harsh conditions and salt water. Modern paint coatings, including the use of environmentally friendly paints are essential to the upkeep of vessels.

As an Apprentice Painter you will be exposed to a range of painting skills including the application of powder coatings, paint spraying, surface preparation, defect cleaning and sign writing.

Entry Requirements

You need 5 subjects at National 4 including English, Maths and a science or technological subject.

You will be expected to be medically fit as deemed necessary to perform the role, be eligible to work in the UK and be able to successfully achieve security clearance.

Training

This is a minimum 3 year apprenticeship. A common basic training programme is delivered in year one, mixing theory with practical work experience. Vocational training along with college programme in the second & third year means it’s a mixture of ‘on and the job” training’ and working on ships in construction in the yards and attending a block release programme at the local college.

The CITB require trainees in Painting and Decorating to complete a Trade Test after 1 year continued experience in the business.

Year 1: SVQ Performing Engineering Operations at SCQF Level 5/SVQ Painting and Decorating at SCQF Level 5 (Core Skills/Functional Skills)
Year 2: SVQ Painting and Decorating at SCQF Level 6 Modules
Year 3: SVQ Advanced Craft Modules
Year 4 Trade Test final module of SVQ at SCQF Level 6
