History of Art at Aberdeen provides the opportunity to study the art of Britain, Europe and America – architecture, sculpture, drawing, painting, print, decorative and industrial arts – at a university steeped in 500 years of social and artistic development and rated top in Scotland for the impact of the work of its History of Art researchers.

Year 1: Introduction to Art History; Academic Writing for Divinity, History & Philosophy; Getting Started at the University of Aberdeen; Introduction to Modern and Contemporary Art; Encountering Art: Museums Through History.

Year 2: Art Matters: Materials and Techniques; Art and Protest; What is Art?

Years 3: Materialising Faith: Women, Art and Religion, 1150 - 1500; Performance Art and Its Aftermath; Curation: Theory and Practice; The Twelfth - Century Renaissance; Art & Society in 18th Century England.

Year 4: History of Art Dissertation

Entry Requirements

2025 entry requirements:

Standard entry:
4 Highers at BBBB (by end of S5) plus English at National 5. Those with Highers at BBB by end of S5 are encouraged to apply.

Entry to year 2 may be possible with 3 Advanced Highers at ABB including a relevant subject at A.

Widening access entry:
2 Highers at BB (by end of S5). Additional Highers/Advanced Highers in S6.

1 Foundation Apprenticeship is accepted in place of a Higher.

Candidates required to demonstrate a strong interest in the study of music in one or more of a range of disciplines including performance, composition, music technology, musicology, and community engagement. Graded qualifications on instrument or voice are welcome but are not essential. Performance studies will require audition on arrival.
