Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is an academic partner of the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) and the only college in the world where all higher education provision and administration are conducted in Scottish Gaelic.

It is spread over two buildings, Àrainn Ostaig and Àrainn Chaluim Chille, which are interlinked by a well-lit pathway and are only a short walk apart. The Centre for Creative and Cultural Industries, Fàs, is located next to Àrainn Chaluim Chille.

Part of the new Kilbeg initiative, Ionad Iain Nobail, is the Centre for Academic Research, Knowledge Transfer and Enterprise. The end result of the initiative is the creation of the first new ‘planned village’ on Skye.

Courses and subjects

The college offers CertHE and DipHE, degrees and postgraduate qualifications, some of which are available by distance learning. There is also a range of short courses.

In addition to the Gaelic element, qualifications combine another subject from one of Development, Education, Gaelic Culture, Media Studies or Traditional Music.

Facilities and services

Sabhal Mòr Ostaig has modern facilities available on campus, including an exceptional library collection, broadcast and recording facilities, residential student accommodation and a Gaelic-medium child care facility.

Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is internationally recognised as a National Centre for the Gaelic language and culture and it plays a leading role in the promotion of the Gaelic arts and culture.
