Abertay University was originally founded as the Dundee Technical Institute in 1888. It lies right in the heart of Dundee city centre, and all its campuses are within a quarter of a mile of each other.

Courses and specialisms

The university is based on four schools and a range of specialist centres.

The university offers a huge range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Abertay is well known for its world-leading courses in computer arts and computer games technology.

It is also among Scotland’s top leading universities for biomed and civil engineering.


There are around 4,500 students, representing 66 countries.
According to HESA, 94.8% of students from the 2016/17 academic year went into employment or further study within six months of graduating.

Facilities and services

Abertay University has many great facilities to offer its students including White Space located on the ground floor of the university’s Kydd Building; the award winning Bernard King Library which includes fully equipped seminar rooms, study rooms and a language centre; a Student Centre which is the cultural and social hub of the city campus; and Sport@Abertay, which plays an important part of university life, with over 20 sports clubs on offer. The Hannah Maclure Centre provides an informal and cultural space for students including a state-of-the-art cinema and performance stage and the Students’ Association offers a wide range of societies covering all interests.


Abertay is ranked 9th in the UK for forensic science. This is up 8 places from last year (Complete University Guide 2020).

The National Centre for Excellence for Computer Games Education courses in The School of Design and Informatics are the best in Europe for the third year in row. The prestigious Princeton Review rankings show Abertay’s games degrees in both the undergraduate and postgraduate world Top 25, while the University remains the best placed European institution.
