Year 1 - CertHE

Core modules are:
Archaeological theory and method; Travellers in the wilderness: literature and exile; Literary theory: history and practice

You will also choose two archaeology option module, which may include:
Historic landscapes; World archaeology; European prehistories; Archaeology and the lab (subject to validation)

Plus one literature option module, which may include:
Coming out: late 19th and 20th Century theatre; Literary discoveries: an introduction to prose fiction; World real and imagined: an introduction to poetry; Introduction to Gaelic Prose

Year 2 - DipHE

Core modules are:
Excavation skills (compulsory); normally taken during Summer or Easter vacation at a site location off-campus. You will be responsible for covering the costs of any travel and subsistence associated with your participation in this two-week module.

You will choose two archaeology option modules, which may include:
Scottish archaeology; Digital heritages; Managing archaeology for contemporary society; Wetland archaeology (subject to validation)

Plus three literature option modules, which may include
Introduction to Gaelic poetry; Male ideals and female desires in Medieval poetry; Theatrical power play: classical and modern tragedy; Heroic literature: epic from classical to contemporary

Year 3 - BA

Core modules are:
Archaeology and interpretation; Archaeological sciences

You will choose one archaeology option module, which may include:
Pre-history of the Highlands and Islands; Historical archaeology of the Highlands and Islands;
Archaeology project; Practical environmental archaeology (subject to validation)

Plus three literature option modules, which may include:
Gaoir nam ban: Gaelic women's poetry 1644-1746; Children's literature; Psychogeography and the city; Romantic genius; Modern times: popular culture and modernism; Imagining new worlds: Renaissance literature and thought.

Year 4 - BA (Hons)

You will complete a dissertation in archaeology or literature. You will also study one option module from your chosen dissertation subject plus three option modules from the other subject.

Archaeology option modules may include:
Sustainability past and present; Vikings and Norse archaeology in the North Atlantic; Funerary and burial archaeology; Maritime archaeology and heritage of Northern Scotland; Landscape archaeology; Neolithic Orkney; The Iron Age of Scotland c800BC-800AD; Peoples, plants and animals

Literature option modules may include:
Pushing boundaries; Avant-grade literature; Past and present: historiography; Postmodernism

Entry Requirements

3 Highers at BBC including 2 relevant subjects. HNC Social Science may give you entry to year 2.
