Latin occupies a major place in the history of world culture: Latin is the ancestor of many European languages; world literature still turns to classical writers for inspiration; and much of our knowledge of European history depends upon documents written in Latin. Studying Latin at university confronts students with challenges of language learning and literary analysis. It also gives us a window onto the extraordinary history and culture of ancient Rome and the Roman Empire that extended across most of the Mediterranean world for so many centuries.
Undergraduate courses cover a variety of areas from the Roman Republic through to the late Roman Empire. Students are able to study Latin as an independent discipline, or they can choose a joint degree option and study Latin alongside Greek (as part of a Classics degree), history (ancient and modern), modern languages, English literature, philosophy or social anthropology.
