Located at the crossroads between Europe, Africa and Asia, the Middle East has played a pivotal role on the world stage from ancient times.

The University of Edinburgh is recognised in the UK and internationally as a leading institution for the study of the Middle East, Middle Eastern languages and the Islamic world. Their collections in the subject are world-class.

Year 1:
You will take classes and receive instruction in a Middle Eastern language, either Arabic, Persian or Turkish, as well as studying Islamic history, plus one optional course.

Year 2:
You continue with your language studies, either taking Arabic 2, Persian 2 or Turkish 2. You will also take Modern Middle Eastern History plus one optional course of your choice.

Year 3:
You may have the option to study abroad, where you will continue to study a range of courses on subjects relating to Islam or the Middle East, including history, politics, religion or cultural studies. Alternatively, you may study similar courses in Edinburgh.

Year 4:
You will continue with your honours courses and also complete a dissertation.

2026 entry requirements

Standard entry:
4 Highers at ABBB (first sitting) or 4 or 5 Highers at AABB/ABBBB (two sittings) plus English at National 5.

Widening access entry:
4 Highers at ABBB (by end of S6) plus English at National 5. Highers at BBB must be achieved in one sitting S4-S6.
