Germany, Austria and Switzerland are all countries with a diverse and turbulent culture and history. In addition to studying German language, students will acquire a thorough understanding of past and current German culture, and its significance in the modern world.

German at Aberdeen has an outstanding reputation, top-rated for teaching, with broad, flexible and
diverse programmes covering language, literature, history and culture and many subject combinations. You’ll also have the opportunity to spend at least one semester abroad.

Year 1: All students will take a language and culture course appropriate to their current German skills – ‘beginners’ or ‘qualified’.

Year 2: Modern German Culture 3 and 4; Intensive language study at appropriate level.

Year 3: German Honours Language Study Abroad.

Years 4 and 5: German Language Study for Honours; Dissertation; Selection of specialised modules on culture and history.

Entry Requirements

2025 entry requirements:

Standard entry:
4 Highers at BBBB (by end of S5) plus English at National 5. Those with Highers at BBB by end of S5 are encouraged to apply.

Entry to year 2 may be possible with 3 Advanced Highers at ABB including German and another relevant subject at AB or BA.

Widening access entry:
2 Highers at BB (by end of S5). Additional Highers/Advanced Highers in S6.

National 5 Maths or Applications of Maths necessary for study with Accountancy, Economics and Finance.

(M) Higher Maths necessary

1 Foundation Apprenticeship is accepted in place of a Higher.
