The English degree at Strathclyde meets the traditional objectives of English as a university discipline, producing graduates who have a range of literary knowledge, critical skills and scholarly interests.
Beyond this, however, the Department also aims to produce graduates whose qualities could be defined as the fullest possible possession of their own language. You will develop ways of understanding the relationship between language and literature, seeing language not just as a means of everyday communication, but as encoding cultural forms and versions of human possibility. Teaching through lectures and tutorials is supplemented by reading parties, theatre visits and by the use of films (partly integrated into the Glasgow Film Theatre programme) and video-recordings.
English may be studied as a Principal Subject leading to the award of the BA degree or the BA with Honours in English. In addition, students may read for a BA Joint Honours degree.
