First Year: Politics. Introduction to Political Science considers key themes in the discipline, including democracy, participation, institutions and policymaking.

International Relations: Introduction to International Relations looks at the state-of-the art of theorising international relations, via consideration of the major schools of theory and the work of major authors.

Second Year: Politics. Political Ideologies considers differing theoretical notions of the state and democracy. It provides an introduction to some of the broad theoretical and conceptual challenges and problems involved in political analysis.

Democracy considers the effectiveness and existence of various forms of democratic practices across the world.

International Relations: Theories of IR is an introduction to the major perspectives that have evolved in the discipline of International Relations within a framework emphasising the importance of methodological issues to our understanding of the subject.

International Political Economy introduces the study of the global distribution of wealth and power and how this shapes the conduct of international relations.

Third and Fourth Year (Honours): Honours courses taken in the third and fourth year vary widely and are chosen from a menu of over thirty options, drawing on the research expertise of staff.

Entry Requirements

2025 entry requirements:

Standard entry:
4 Highers at BBBB (by end of S5) plus English at National 5. Those with Highers at BBB by end of S5 are encouraged to apply.

Entry to year 2 may be possible with 3 Advanced Highers at ABB including relevant subjects at AB.

Widening access entry:
2 Highers at BB (by end of S5). Additional Highers/Advanced Highers in S6.

1 Foundation Apprenticeship is accepted in place of a Higher.
